Century Star Shivarajkumar’s last release, Bhairathi Ranagal, which is the prequel to Mufti and explores the origin tale of his character, had released in theatres in November 2024. The film had a good theatrical run, following which the Kannada original came to Amazon Prime Video in December. The Telugu dubbed version went to aha, and there was no news on any other dubbed option, until today.
Earlier today, Sun Network announced that the Tamil and Malayalam versions of Bhairathi Ranagal were headed to Sun NXT, where it will be available to stream from February 28. “The roar of Bhairathi Ranagal begins” read the post. Directed by Narthan, Bhairathi Ranagal also stars Rahul Bose, Rukmini Vasanth, Chaya Singh, Shabeer Kallarakkal, Madhu Guruswamy, Avinash, Babu Hirannaiah, Devaraj, among others.
For viewers not familiar with Mufti, the original is available to stream on Zee5 with Kannada audio and English subtitles. Tamil audiences have the option of watching the remake Pathu Thala, featuring Silambarasan on Amazon Prime Video, before catching Bhairathi Ranagal on Sun NXT. But if these are not options, the basic premise of Mufti revolved around the undercover investigation into the empire of feared crime lord Bhairathi Ranagal in Ronapura.
A police officer, Gana, played by Sriimurali, infiltrates the ranks of Ranagal’s gang and wins his trust too, while meticulously gathering intel about the latter. Turns out, while Ranagal is a crime lord to the outside world, for the people of Ronapura, he is a saviour. Ranagal eventually surrenders and is incarcerated, but it is revealed that he knew all along that Gana was a cop.
In Bhairathi Ranagal, Narthan explores how the title character came to be the machete wielding gangster. From certain untoward incidents in his childhood, to Ranagal trying to turn his life around for the better by getting a law degree and fighting legally for the rights of his people, and finally losing trust in the exact same system – that’s the journey that unfolds in the film.
