Bheeshma Parvam was already touted to be Mammootty’s biggest release since the pandemic and expectations kept piling on with its being Amal Neerad and the megastar’s second collaboration after the hugely successful Big B in 2007.

The film, which hit theatres on March 3, was also the first big budget, superstar-driven venture to release in Kerala with cinema halls operating at 100% seating capacity this year. This also makes the film's success an important barometer in terms of evaluating where the industry was heading with the pandemic still looming large.

From the initial reviews of fans, there’s much to cheer about – for the film’s team, the theatre exhibitors and the audience. Audience, who had caught the movie’s first show at 8.30am in theatres across Kerala, soon flooded Twitter with reviews, hailing the film’s story, the performances of its actors led by Mammootty and also its music by Sushin Shyam.

While most of the initial responses were positive, there were also many who though the second half of the film couldn't sustain the momentum of the first half. Also, the references of The Godfather and Sarkar were plenty, that it became turn off for a few viewers.

The movie revolves around Michael, who rules his family with fear. After the younger generation begin having problems with how he runs the family, they team up with Michael’s old foes to bring him down. How this impacts the family and also Michael forms the plot of the period thriller set in the late 1980s.

Bheeshma Parvam, which is scri pted by Amal and Devadath Shaji, also has an ensemble star cast featuring Soubin Shahir, Shine Tom Chacko, Nadiya Moidu, Sreenath Bhasi, Sudev Nair, Nedumudi Venu, Dileesh Pothan, Lena and Anagha. The film’s music is composed by Sushin Shyam and Anend C Chandran handles its cinematography.
