Malayalam cinema’s most prolific actor and undisputed superstar, Mohanlal has featured in a fair share of tragedies over the years. Most notably, in films such as Thalavattam, Ennishtam Ninnishtam, Kireedam, Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam, Moonam Pakkam, and Thanmathra. Filmmaker Blessy’s Thanmathra, which released in 2005, won several awards for the filmmaker and the film’s lead star Mohanlal. But Bhramaram, which happens to be the duo's second collaboration, is relatively lesser-known and yet, a gem nonetheless. Released in 2009, the film is a genre-bending tragedy that narrates the story of a man who inexplicably visits the family of a successful stockbroker claiming to be an old classmate named Jose. Unni, the stockbroker, is suspicious of Jose’s intentions and seeks advice from another friend and former classmate, Alex. As Jose slowly becomes more involved in Unni and Alex’s lives, they are convinced that Jose is not who he claims to be. The narrative of the film switches between flashback sequences and the present, revealing dark secrets and tragic tales. While Bhramaram lacks the finesse and polish of Blessy’s previous works such as Kaazhcha and Thanmathra, the riveting screenplay, unexpected twists, and Mohanlal’s tragic depiction of a morally-conflicted man, make up for it. The film features supporting roles by Murali Gopi, Suresh Menon, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Bhoomika Chawla, and K.P.A.C. Lalitha.

You can watch Bhramaram on Disney+ Hotstar.
