In a disheartening piece of news for fans of The Sinner, it has been announced that the crime drama’s ongoing fourth season will be its last. The first episode of the final season aired in October, on the USA Network.
According to Deadline, one of the reasons the network decided to cancel it’s scripted series was its inability to compete with the plethora of streaming content that have started coming up on digital platforms. The Sinner was one the USA Network’s last ongoing scripted shows. Series creator Derek Simonds took to social media to address the news, expressing his gratitude to have worked on the show.
The first season of The Sinner, starring Bill Pullman, was based on German author Petra Hammesfahr’s 2007 novel of the same name. The crime drama was originally intended to be a limited series, but as the first season was a hit with critics and fans alike, the show was turned into an anthology. Only Pullman appears as a regular on all the seasons of the show, with the cast changing with each season.
The fourth season follows Pullman’s character, Detective Harry Ambrose, as he tries to enjoy his retirement from police work along with his partner Sonya. The couple’s plans for spending a quiet vacation on an island in Maine goes awry when the town is witness to a shocking tragedy. The detective is forced to come out of retirement to help solve the mystery.
In addition to Pullman, the fourth season also stars Frances Fisher, Alice Kremelberg, Neal Huff, Cindy Cheung, Ronin Wong, Jessica Hecht and Michael Mosley. The series' finale will premiere on the USA Network on December 1.
The first three seasons of The Sinner are available to stream on Netflix.
