For K-drama fans who were thrilled by Song Joong-ki's portrayal of Vincenzo in 2021, the anticipation for his return to the screen in a quite similar type of role filled with intensity, high stakes, and a grippingly violent narrative has finally been satisfied. Now , the 39-years-old actor delivers on this expectation with his latest project, but this time in the form of a film rather than a drama. Titled–Bogotá: City of the Lost, the film takes the viewers into the dark underbelly of Colombia's criminal world, where survival hangs on a severe lack of trust and the fear of death among the citizens.
The film also offers a glimpse into the repercussions of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, which forces Kook-hee (Song Joong-ki) and his family to relocate to Bogotá, Colombia, at a young age. Leaving behind their familiar life, they embark on a journey to a city filled with danger and uncertainty. The film is all about Kook-hee’s navigate the dangerous world that's drown into the black market, smuggling, murders, and various other crimes, and ultimately his ambition to rule the infamous Colombian underworld.
The film follows Kook-hee's journey from a struggling newcomer trying to make a living in Bogotá and return to his roots someday to a mafia-life figure who controls a significant portion of the illegal trade, showcasing his evolution into a hardened and calculating individual.
Kook-hee's rise to success is undeniable, yet the paths he takes in every step are questionable. The film tries to ignite viewers to struggle with the morality of his choices, questioning whether the extreme pressures he faced, along with the death of his father, provide sufficient justification for his actions. But one thing the film will keep you remember that struggle and fight for your rights will definitely give you success one day. You just have to keep patience and keep on follow you path and believe in yourself, whithout getting distracted.
The film deliberately avoids a simple redemption for Kook-hee. The conclusion of the film remains open-ended, igniting different speculations. Viewers are left to wonder whether Kook-hee has turned into a villain, or a survivor who made difficult choices to survive. The ending adds various layers of complexities to his character.
Just before the credits roll, we see Kook-hee in a devastated situation, his shirt is covered with sprinkles of blood. The most significant scene in the climax is his not showing any emotions in his face or in his actions. His just glaring at the Bogotá city from the highest hills signifies that he has completely lost his innocence and become the ideal ruler of the underworld. A young teenage immigrant boy who just wanted to make a good life for himself and his family, managed to beat the most powerful people in Colombia.
The ending explains that Kook-hee has finally reached the top place called Zone 6, which is the ultimate area for the wealthy people. Although it was not his dream to achieve, it came at a great cost.
