Kannada filmmaker Shashank has begun promotions for his next directorial, Brat, a film that he has done with his Kousalya Supraja Rama actor Darling Krishna. The film, he says, will be released in multiple languages, as he believes that the content is universal and will be relatable to youngsters under 30 years of age, as it explores their ambitions, aspirations and more.

Shashank: Action films are a safe bet

Brat is Shashank’s 11th film, and while he has consistently tried to switch it up as far as the genre he’s working on goes from project to project, the filmmaker has dabbled with action flicks thrice already. Why’s that so? “The reason most filmmakers, including me, choose to make action films is because it has a far wider reach than any other genre. It is the genre that guarantees maximum viewership. So, when you look at a film in terms of revenue and the potential reach, action films are a safe bet and that is why I have also dabbled with the genre,” he explains, in conversation with DD Chandana.

Having said that, Shashank adds that even with his action films, his intention has always been to also package a pertinent message for society in the narrative. The filmmaker reckons that with each of his action films, whether it was Jarasandha , Bachchan or Thayige Thakka Maga , there was always more to it than just action. “I have always addressed a series issue through my films. The advantage of doing it in an action film is that it reaches more people,” he adds.

Incidentally, Bachchan, Shashank’s only film with Kiccha Sudeep so far, was rumoured to be getting a sequel. Why didn’t that take off? “It was not meant to be a sequel that would be a continuation of the story of the original film. Bachchan 2 was to have a different story altogether. Making another film is matter of a lot of permutations and combinations, which, as of now, have not worked out,” he says.
