The fifth studio album Arirang by BTS will be released on March 20 and their comeback performance live from Seoul’s historic Gwanghwamun will be live-streamed by Netflix on March 21. 

The album’s tracklist includes Body to Body, Hooligan, Aliens, FYA, 2.0., No. 29, SWIM (Lead Single), Merry Go Round, NORMAL, Like Animals, they don’t know ’bout us, One More Night, Please, and Into the Sun.

Recently, an official BTS Animation Arirang trailer was released, which centres on a 2026 animated teaser for their fifth album, Arirang, inspired by the 1896 recording of the Korean folk song by seven students in Washington D.C. The trailer parallels the journeys of these historic students with the seven members of BTS, blending ideas of cultural preservation, identity, and the film’s guiding question: What is your love song?

What is Arirang?

In 1896, seven Korean students travelled to the United States to study at Howard University during a turbulent period in Korea. They boarded the ship Empress of India with little money, and upon arrival, they had trouble communicating because none of them spoke English. At a student gathering, they performed Korean folk songs, including Arirang, introducing Korean music to many Americans for the first time. 

American ethnologist Alice Cunningham Fletcher later recorded them singing the song on wax cylinders, labelling it “Love Song: Ar-ra-rang.” The recording became the earliest known audio record of Korean music. Arirang, often considered Korea's unofficial national anthem, expresses themes of longing, separation, and resilience, and its title functions more as a melancholy refrain than a word with a specific literal meaning.
