Two Bollywood films – Gadar 2 and OMG 2 – were released on August 11, the week of Independence Day. They are competing hard with each other. Gadar 2 has Sunny Deol and Amisha Patel in the lead. In OMG 2, Akshay Kumar teams up with Pankaj Tripathi. Gadar 2 has created nothing short of a sensation at the box office. On the other hand, OMG 2 also did well at the BO. In Tollywood, Dev’s Byomkesh O Durgo Rohoshyo and Cheeni 2, which features Madhumita Sarcar and Aparajita Adhya in the lead, were released on the same day.
The Byomkesh film was announced on the Bengali New Year in April. Ever since, a lot of discussion, arguments, and online trilling went on around Dev’s decision of playing the iconic Bengali sleuth. But after the film was released, the actor was praised and a large section of the audience agreed that he has matured as an actor. Rukmini’s Satyabati look was also praised. Birsa Dasgupta’s direction was rated high. Many people said that they did not watch Byomkesh on such a large scale before. The director's storytelling was also liked by the audience. Byomkesh is a family man here. Satyabati and Ajit are not side characters, but rather the shield and inspiration of Byomkesh.
According to Tolly Bangla Office, Dev’s film did a business of five million on Independence Day. It earned around 1.55 crores in five days, which is remarkable for a Bengali film. Bengali films, in competition with Bollywood, get fewer halls and the ticket price is also low. Though the film was released all over India, keeping the Bengalis outside West Bengal in mind, the number of halls is not much.
Gadar 2 did a business of 294 crores in seven days. OMG 2 did a business of 120 crores.
