Former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan passed away on July 21, 2025, marking the end of an era in the state’s political history. VS, as he is popularly called, was often hailed as a man of the masses, and had a huge legion of followers, cutting across party lines. Apart from his tall achievements in the political field, VS also had made an appearance in a movie. Yes, you read that, VS Achuthanandan, the towering Communist leader from Kerala, acted in a Malayalam movie, titled Campus Diary.

When VS Achuthanandan acted in Malayalam movie

VS Achuthanandan breathed his last on Monday at the age of 101. The iconic leader who has had an impact in almost every field in Kerala also made an appearance in a film, at the age of 93.

Though his speech delivery and mannerisms have been imitated in several films, the political leader made his film debut in a 2016 movie, called Campus Diary. The film is helmed by Jeevan Das in his directorial debut. Popular Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu is also part of the cast, along with actors Sudev Nair, Gauthami Nair, and RJ Mathukutty.

VS appeared as himself in the film, which revolves around student politics and activism. His scenes were shot in Kannur. When the movie released, Achuthanandan along with his family watched Campus Diary on the big screen. The event was also covered by Malayalam news channels.

Malayalam actors pay their last respects to VS

One of the most popular political leaders from Kerala, VS's demise led to an outpouring of grief and condolence messages from people and personalities from various walks of life. Malayalam stars too paid their heartfelt tribute to the iron-willed political leader.

Superstar Mohanlal paid homage to the leader, calling VS a 'true people's hero'. Mammootty too paid his tribute to the dear comrade VS Achuthanandan. Actors Manju Warrier and Prithviraj Sukumaran, and the legendary singer KJ Yesudas, were among the other noted personalities to pay rich tributes to VS, who was Kerala's Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011.
