Cannes 2022: Anurag Thakur’s outfit has a big message, but you need to look closer

This year’s Cannes International Film Festival is very dear to people across the country, as India was selected as the country of honour. Anurag Thakur led the biggest Indian contingent at the prestigious festival and the minister’s outfit has a hidden message. 

The Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting is now getting a fair amount of attention towards the outfit he wore as he walked down the red carpet. He revealed that the outfit was handmade by the artisans of Chanderi (Madhya Pradesh) and Bhagalpur (Bihar) in a chanderi fabric called tarz with silk and cotton.

However, the minister’s outfit consisted of golden metallic buttons with the word “Bharat” engraved in different languages, sending a message of unity. “The outfit is a tribute to the handloom and khadi weavers of India, in keeping with the ‘vocal for local’ call by our honourable Prime Minister,” said Thakur as reported by Hindustan Times.

While the minister led the Indian contingent, AR Rahman, Ricky Kej, R Madhavan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pooja Hegde, Tamannah Bhatia, Vani Tripathi, Shekhar Kapur and Prasoon Joshi were among the stars who walked down the red carpet at Cannes 2022. 

A number of Indian films will be screened at this year’s festival, which includes some Indian classics to world premieres. While Satyajit Ray’s 1970-urban drama Pratidwandi and Govindan Aravindan’s restored classic, Thampu will be played at Cannes, R. Madhavan’s biographical drama, Rocketry will have its premiere at the festival. Rocketry is based on the life of the controversial ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, which is directed and produced by Madhavan.
