The much-awaited fifth instalment from the CBI Sethurama Iyer franchise hit theatres on May 1 worldwide. While the movie titled CBI 5: The Brain has got a record number of screens outside India, especially in the Middle East, those outside Kerala have been complaining with the movie releasing only in select centres.
While the reason for a limited release outside Kerala is due to theatre owners opting for other big releases in respective languages along with KGF: Chapter 2, those anxiously waiting to watch Mammootty’s investigative thriller will have to wait till May 5, by when the movie would be releasing in more centres in India.
The film though will also be available on OTTs a month after its theatrical release. While it was rumoured that CBI 5’s satellite and digital rights were picked up for a record price by Asianet and Disney+ Hotstar, we now have it that the movie will premiere online on Netflix. Hotstar had previously bagged the digital streaming rights for Mammootty’s Bheeshma Parvam.
CBI 5 revolves around a series of suspected murders involving a state minister, a police officer, a doctor and an activist, in a case referred to as Basket Killings. Sethurama Iyer and his team are roped in to investigate the case which is tough even for the sleuth to crack.
Apart from Mammootty, the film also has Saikumar reprising his character as DySP Sathyadas from Sethurama Iyer CBI, Mukesh as Chacko and Jagathy Sreekumar as Vikram. The new additions in the CBI team include Renji Panicker, Ramesh Pisharody and Prashanth Alexander. Dileesh Pothan, Asha Sharath, Anoop Menon, Sudev Nair and Kaniha are also part of the cast of the film, which is directed by K Madhu and scripted by SN Swamy.
Meanwhile, Mammootty’s next OTT release will be the crime thriller Puzhu, which is helmed by Ratheena and has Parvathy Thiruvothu as the female lead. The movie will begin streaming on Sony LIV soon.
