There’s probably no other franchise in Malayalam cinema that has enjoyed the same popularity as Mammootty’s CBI Sethurama Iyer. Thirty-four years since the first instalment of the franchise Oru CBI Diary Kurippu released, the team of the film, including the megastar, its director K Madhu and scriptwriter SN Swamy, are gearing up for the fifth film – CBI 5: The Brain.

Apart from Mammootty reprising his role as the iconic sleuth Sethurama Iyer, the film will also have Mukesh and Jagathy Sreekumar returning as Chacko and Vikram, respectively. CBI 5 also marks the first time that Jagathy is part of a mainstream film after being paralysed in a car accident a decade ago. The film’s latest trailer also showed a glimpse of his character from the film.

What is CBI 5 about?

While the makers have kept the story under wraps, the teaser and trailer reveals that the movie will have Sethurama Iyer investigating a conspiracy. It also reveals that this is tied to a series of murders that the CBI officer refers to has Basket Killing. The teaser also showed that Sethurama Iyer speaks about a conspiracy that relates to the deaths of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi. Whether this is tied to the actual case he will be investigating in the film or if it’s just another random mention, the audience will have to find out while watching the film.

The film also has several leading talents in Malayalam as part of the cast. Soubin Shahir will be seen in different get-ups in the film, which has Saikumar and Anoop Menon as police officers. Renji Panicker and Ramesh Pisharody play members of the CBI team while Asha Sharath and Dileesh Pothan will be seen as a lawyer and Kerala chief minister, respectively. Kaniha and Prashanth Alexander are also part of the film.

Where to watch CBI 5?

The movie is set to hit theatres worldwide on May 1. It’s reported that the film’s digital and satellite rights have been bought by Disney+ Hotstar and Asianet, respectively, and the film will be available to stream online a month after its theatrical run.
