Chandan Roy Sanyal often comes to West Bengal to act in films. His directorial debut venture Suzie Q was screened at the 29th Kolkata International Film Festival on Saturday. Parno Mittrah and Prakash Jha acted in this Hindi psychological thriller. Chandan also played a role.
Parno previously worked with Chandan in Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s film Urojahaj. The actor said Parno was his first choice in Suzie Q. Why direction? Chandan said, “A director is hidden in every actor. The story came to me during the pandemic. I started preparing then.”
Chandan is selective while working in Bengal. He recently finished Ramkamal Mukherjee's Binodini: Ekti Natir Upakhyan. Does he consciously work selectively in Tollywood? Chandan told Anandabazar Online, “Not exactly. I will work if I get an offer. People think I don't work. I don't think I get an offer. I think I am not used much here.” He said that currently, he has no offer from Tollywood. He also drew the example of his mentor, director Vishal Bhardwaj. “Vishal once said that after the film Maachis, he did not get any offer to compose a film. Then he started directing films for music direction. This is very much like my coming to directing.”
Chandan is pleased that the film was screened at KIFF. He already started shooting his second film as a director. The film is a musical and its name is Play Back Singer. It tells the story of a girl, hailing from Bihar, who becoming a playback singer in the nineties. Priyanka Basu, Nidhi Sinha, and Priyanshu Chatterjee act in the film.
