Rapper, music composer and Bigg Boss Kannada Season 5 winner Chandan Shetty knows that he has an audience on the small screen. This is also why he believes that his next film, Suthradaari, will do well when it comes on OTT. The film is set to release in theatres on May 9, 2025, which is a pre-requisite for streaming platforms to even consider a deal. If this were not the case, Chandan would have been content with a direct-to-OTT release as well. But as things stand, the Pogaru hit-m aker musician-actor has to overcome the hurdle that is a theatrical release.

Chandan Shetty: I was introduced to audiences on TV through Bigg Boss Kannada

Chandan is hopeful though that his team manages to crack a deal in the run-up to May 9, allowing them to publicize Suthradaari’s post-theatrical destination as well and tell audiences where to watch it. Chandan was pragmatic when he spoke at Suthradaari’s trailer launch, saying, “I have immense faith in the power of OTTs. I am a scmall-screen artiste; I was introduced to audiences on TV through Bigg Boss Kannada. People are used to seeing me on TV and that is why I told the producer of Suthradaari that while I cannot give him any guarantee about the film’s fate in theatres, on OTT, it will, most definitely, be a big hit.”

Chandan says that he firmly believes that it is time for filmmakers to give equal importance to theatrical and OTT outings. “We have to understand that theatres are no longer the only medium of entertainment for people. Today, it’s in the palm of your hand – you name it and you have it on your mobile devices. That’s the reality that we have to accept and live with. I believe that we need to make films that will work on OTT platforms,” he stated matter-of-fact.

The rapper-actor clarified that this applies for smaller productions, that do not have the wherewithal to survive theatrical losses, unlike big-budget star-led movies that have the capacity to recover their investment from multiple sources.
