It seems to be the season of cameos for Malayalam stars. After Dulquer Salmaan, Tovino Thomas, Antony Varghese and Basil Joseph showed up in cameo roles in this year’s Onam releases, it’s now the turn of the superstars - Mohanlal and Mammootty.
Mohanlal has already canned his portions for Dileep’s Bha. Bha. Ba, an entertainer that also has Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan. OTTplay has now exclusively learnt that Mammootty, who is set to resume shooting Patriot after his health setback later this month, could also be seen in a cameo role in the wrestling entertainer Chatha Pacha.
A source in the know tells OTTplay, “The makers have approached Mammootty for a pivotal role in the movie. A substantial portion of the movie, which has cinematography by Bheeshma Parvam and Premam's Anend C Chandran, has already been shot and it has come out really well. Mammootty’s cameo would be one of the highlights of the movie, which is sure to appeal to a lot of male audiences of all age groups, who have followed wrestling growing up.”
The film is helmed by debutant Advaith Nayar, who is Mohanlal’s nephew. He had previously directed short films, including Shrimaan Travels and served as the creative director for Stolen Dance in 3 of Hearts short-film anthology. He had also assisted filmmakers such as Rajeev Ravi and Jeethu Joseph.
Chatha Pacha revolves around a group of misfits, who form an underground wrestling club in Fort Kochi, in a bid to rebuild their lives. How the group manage to draw big crowds, carry their larger-than-life persona and stage matches in the “squared circle” while facing their personal demons and past form the plot of the film, which has Arjun Ashokan, Roshan Mathew, Vishak Nair and Ishan Shoukath of Marco and Padakkalam fame in pivotal roles.
The makers of the film have already roped in Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio to compose for the wrestling entertainer, and recently sold its audio rights to T-Series for a record sum of Rs 3Cr, according to our source. The team is also currently pushing to sell its OTT rights to a leading digital streaming partner, ahead of its planned theatrical release later this year.
With Mammootty’s cameo, themes of wrestling and in-ring action, the movie should have significant buzz when it hits theatres. The team has already started releasing promotional material from the film, the latest of which saw the character reveal of Arjun Ashokan, who plays Loco Lobo, in Chatha Pacha. Arjun Ashokan has been on a roll lately with Sumathi Valavu and Thalavara. Meanwhile, Mammootty's next release will be Kalamkaval, which is set to hit theatres soon. The movie will have the megastar essaying the antagonist.
