Dinesh Vijan, who produced movies like Chhaava and Stree 2, spoke about where his team went right, and how others might be going wrong

Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava, which is now streaming on OTT, is the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2025. Shraddha Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao's highest-grossing film of 2024, Stree 2, has something in common with the biggest Hindi film of 2025 - they share the same producer. Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films had backed both the movies, which went on to become blockbusters. With another movie on its way, Dinesh got cracking on what probably made both Chhaava and Stree 2 blockbuster movies. Here's everything he said...
Stating that Maddock Films is not aspirational to the West, Dinesh Vijan, who was promoting his movie Bhool Chuk Maaf (the third movie to release under the production house after Chhaava and Sky Force) at a recent event, said, "We are very Indian in how we think. The common man wants stories about them. They are coming to the theatre on Friday, a slightly elitist crowd is coming 8-9 days later." Dinesh Vijan added that he has writers and directors who are connected to the new Bharat.
"It’s very important to wish for everyone to do well. Just us doing well is not enough," the producer said, probably hinting at the Sikandar debacle. The movie featuring Salman Khan was expected to perform well at the Box Office, but could barely enter the Rs. 100 crore club a week after its release. This was definitely not the case for the superstar in the pre-pandemic era. Dinesh Vijan seems to have shared the message for Salman, who has been struggling with even Eid releases like Sikandar and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. Interestingly, Sunny Deol's Jaat has also opened to much lower numbers, even when his film Gadar 2 was declared a blockbuster in 2023 itself.
Interestingly, not too long ago, Karan Johar had spoken about Stree 2 success and asked his fellow peers to try and understand what the movie did right. He had hinted at following what the makers were doing. Now with the advice out in the open, will we see a shift in the way Bollywood functions? Time would tell the tale.
