Divya Dutta’s Chiraiya teaser is out, and the series promises to raise bold questions around Indian marriages. It questions whether the lifelong commitment means automatic consent from the spouse. The tagline of the series is #ShaadiLicenseNahiHai. In fact, the teaser itself has been rated A for it poses the serious questions around marriage and consent.
The teaser of Chiraiya makes the topic obvious, but still hidden. The series is likely to delve into the serious matters around marriages and automatic consent. Hints of violence are clear through Prasanna Bisht’s character Pooja, who is married off to the character played by actor Siddharth Shaw. Divya Dutta’s character becomes the key witness to their marriage unfolding.
Divya spoke about her character in a press statement and shared, “While living with this character in Chiraiya, I found myself constantly confronting an uncomfortable truth, how often we silence ourselves in the name of preserving relationships, in the name of keeping the peace.”
The actress, whose character in Farhan Akhtar’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag had faced something similar, reflected how marriage is casually assumed to be a place of unquestioned consent and sacrifice is expected as a natural by-product, to the point where another human’s pain is ignored/becomes invisible. “When you witness someone you love being diminished or wronged, do you stay quiet to protect what exists, or do you risk everything to protect what is right? There is no easy answer, and perhaps that is what makes it so deeply unsettling,” she pointed. The actress further hoped that the story helps people recognize the truth that often goes unnamed.
Chiraiya also stars Sanjay Mishra, Faisal Rashid, Tinnu Anand and Sarita Joshi in pivotal roles. The series can be streamed on JioHotstar via OTTplay Premium soon.
