Chiwetel Ejiofor and Emilia Clarke have been cast together for a sci-fi romantic comedy titled The Pod Generation. The film is directed by Sophie Barthes and is set against the backdrop of a near-future where artificial intelligence (AI) is a rage. In the film, Ejiofor as Alvy and Clarke as Rachel play the role of a couple who lives in New York City. They will be seen taking their relationship to the next level but not the conventional way.
As per reports in Variety, Rachel's new work gives them a chance to use a new tool developed by a tech giant. This tool offers couples the opportunity to share pregnancy on a more equal footing via detachable artificial wombs or pods in this movie. However, Alvy who is a botanist and devoted purist have doubts about this method. But his love for Rachel prompts him to leap of faith. Thus begins the wild ride to parenthood in this brave new world.
The film is set to go on floors in March 2022 and talking about the project, director Barthes told the entertainment portal, "Working with Emilia and Chiwetel as a couple on screen is a dream come true."
While praising the actors, the filmmaker said that Clarke's versatility, her disarming sense of humour and capacity to navigate complex emotions are a perfect match to Ejiofor's charisma and extraordinary screen presence.
About the concept of the film, Barthes added, "The idea of the artificial womb as either doom or liberation for women is inherently comedic material."
Whereas Fionnuala Jamison of MK2 Films said that the film is captivating with a near-future story and a distinctly feminine twist that haunts as much as it entertains.
She also said the film will also be raising ethical questions about where technology is taking us as once the womb has been commodified.
Clarke will also be serving as the executive producer of The Pod Generation.
