Director Pa Ranjith is all set to begin shooting for his next with Vikram, which is tentatively being referred to as Chiyaan61. In an interview to a Tamil magazine, the Natchathiram Nagargiradhu director revealed that the pre-production work is going on and that the team is likely to begin shooting at the earliest. He added that the film will have an interesting premise and that it will give hope to a community that has been looking and yearning for it for a really long time.

Though speculations were rife that the film does not have a leading lady, Ranjith dismissed it as a rumour and said that leading lady will play an important character. He added that she will not be seen as a regular female lead singing a duet, but a strong character who will complement the film. This is the first collaboration between Pa Ranjith and Vikram.

Chiyaan 61 is said to be an intense drama set in the Kolar Gold Field in the pre-independence era. Vikram has been spotted with long hair and beard for his character, which he revealed when he made his debut on Twitter. The film is said to be shot in a grand scale and is likely to be released in 3D as well. GV Prakash is scoring the music. The film is bankrolled by KE Gnanavel Raja under his banner Studio Green.

Pa Ranjith is basking in the success of his latest release, Natchathiram Nagargiradhu, which is a bold take on society's regressive notions on love. The film has Dushara Vijayan, Kalidas Jayaram and Kalaiyarasan in the lead. Vikram's last release on the other hand, was Cobra, a spy thriller directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu. Though Vikram's performance was lauded in the film, Cobra failed to set the cash registers ringing and received mixed reviews from the audience and critics. Interestingly, both Cobra and Natchathiram Nagargiradhu released on the same day.
