If the buzz in the industry is to be believed, Chiyaan Vikram's latest spy thriller Cobra is all set to drop on Sony LIV on September 23. Earlier, it was expected that the film will be released on September 30 on the digital platform. But it now looks like the release may be advanced. However, there has been no official announcement on the same.
Vikram's Cobra hit screens on August 31 on the occasion of Vinayagar Chaturthi. The spy thriller, directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu had an ensemble cast including Srinidhi Shetty (marking her debut in Tamil), Mrinalini Ravi, Meenakshi Govind, Roshan Mathew, Sarjano Khalid, Irfan Pathan, KS Ravikumar, Anandraj, Robo Shankar and Miya George to name a few. Vikram played a mathematician who also moonlights as a high-profile assassin and sported multiple avatars in the film.
Music for the film was by AR Rahman, cinematography by Harish Kannan and editing by Bhuvan Srinivasan. Though the film was said to be the first theatrical release of Vikram after a span of three years, it opened to negative reviews and eventually didn't set the cash registers ringing. Ajay Gnanamuthu has also been receiving a lot of criticism for the weak screenplay.
In the meantime, Vikram has moved on to the promotions of Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan. He will be playing the Chola Crown Prince Aditha Karikalan in the film adaptation of Kalki's legendary literary work. The team is all set to kickstart the promotions from the Chola capital, Thanjavur. Vikram, along with Trisha and Jayam Ravi, will be promoting the film at the iconic Brihadeeswara temple. Karthi will not be joining the promotions as he is unwell. Soon after the release, Vikram will begin work on Pa Ranjith's film, which is said to be a film set in the Kolar Gold Fields in the pre-independence era.
