The next leg of the shoot of Chiyaan Vikram's Thangalaan has begun in Kolar Gold Field. A picture of the film's director Pa Ranjith enjoying the sunrise at the location is doing the rounds. The plot of the film revolves around a real-life incident that took place in the Kolar Gold Field in the pre-independence era. The team has recently wrapped up some portions in Chennai. The star cast includes Vikram, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan and Pasupathi to name a few. During the promotions of her latest outing, Christy, Malavika had revealed that the team still had about three to four month's shoot left, and added that the film is likely to release by the end of the year.​

Thangalaam marks Chiyaan Vikram's 61st film and his maiden collaboration with Pa Ranjith. The actor has undergone a complete makeover for the film and had even grown a beard for the same. Vikram plays the titular character and will be seen in a super rugged look. Director Pa Ranjith had stated that ladies of the film will have strong characters in it, which are essential to the story.  Pa Ranjith had revealed in an interview that the film is his attempt to gain respect for a community that had been suppressed for generations and has never got its due.

Music for the movie is composed by GV Prakash. Thangalaan is billed as a pan-India project and will release in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. The film has been bankrolled by Gnanavel Raja's Studio Green and Neelam Productions. The digital rights of the film have been acquired by Netflix for a whopping amount.

Vikram is also awaiting the release of the second instalment of the Ponniyin Selvan series, which is slated to hit screens on April 28. The film has Vikram playing the Crown Prince Aditha Karikalan and revolves around the battle for the Chola throne.
