Kannada actor Sharan had explored the horror comedy genre, albeit by just about skimming its surface with Avatara Purusha, where the focus was on dark magic. A horror movie buff, the genre was to his liking, so when director Navaneeth, who is best known for the horror drama Karvva, approached him with a supernatural subject , he jumped at it. Blending Navaneeth’s and Sharan’s filmmaking sensibilities would be unique, they thought.
The film, Choo Mantar, produced by Tharun Shivappa, was to release in early 2024, but got delayed and eventually hit theatres this January for Sankranti. It opened to largely positive reviews and became the only Kannada film to have made some money in terms of theatrical revenue, in a year that has seen 60-odd releases, in the first 3 months only. The film had a 50-day theatrical run, following which it was said it would be headed to OTT.

In the film, Sharan had double roles, both paranormal experts, but in different time periods. In one, he was Dynamo, a brilliant exorcist, who is brought in to figure out the root cause of the supernatural activities in a mansion called Morgan House, which an India-returned NRI family has inherited. It’s a mystery that Dynamo fails to crack; a mission that his son Gowtham then takes up.
Gowtham’s excuse to check out the haunted house, though, is a treasure that is supposedly buried there, but remains inaccessible to the outside world, as people who step foot in the premises, never make it back out. The film’s major highlight was how Navaneeth connected it to the Aptharakshaka movie universe.
