Malayalam sci-fi mystery thriller Churuli has been a subject of controversy since its OTT release a month ago. The Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial was criticised for its overuse of abusive language, which even led to a legal complaint against it. The Censor Board was also questioned by the Kerala High Court for the certification of the movie.

The Board on Wednesday told the court, according to Malayala Manorama, the version released on the OTT platform SonyLIV was uncensored. The lawyer of the Board allegedly submitted the censored version before Justice P V Kunhikrishnan, which was cleared with an A certificate for public viewing.

In the wake of the Board’s statement, Peggy Fen, the lawyer for the petitioner said he wants to reconsider the terms in the petition, for which he sought more time. Advocate C A Anoop, who appeared for the petitioner also termed the language used in the movie as ‘filthy’.

Meanwhile, after noticing no one appearing for the LJP team, the court postponed the hearing to January 7. The court also added that the petitioner, who is a lawyer herself, should further consider approaching a civil court instead.

In the previous hearing of the case, the HC had tagged the movie’s language as ‘atrocious’, which was released on November 19, on SonyLIV. The petition moved to the court had demanded the removal of the movie from the OTT platform as soon as possible, for the ‘overdose of foul language’ in the movie. The petition had also accused the movie to be a challenging outrage against the modesty of women and children.

It further stated that the movie did not abide by censor board rules and regulations, nor display a statutory warning while the characters were using alcohol or cigarettes. a
