Cillian Murphy has been in the spotlight for a while now, and we're not complaining. The actor has been making headlines for his role in Oppenheimer, winning an Oscar for his performance. There is also buzz around Peaky Blinders, with a movie currently in the making. Now, he has another reason to be in the limelight: the Irish-Belgian co-produced film Small Things Like These, which premiered at the Berlinale this year and received loud applause for both the film and Murphy’s brilliant performance. Before the film even set a release date for the big screen, it had already found a new distributor. Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting update.
Small Things Like These, led by Cillian Murphy and co-produced and financed by Ben Affleck-Matt Damon’s Artists Equity, also marks Murphy’s debut as a producer with his company Big Things Films, which he set up with his close friend and longtime collaborator Alan Maloney. According to the latest reports from Variety, the film will now be distributed by Lionsgate in select parts of the world. The confirmed countries where Lionsgate will release the film include the US, UK, and Ireland.
While there is no confirmation on whether the film will be available on Lionsgate Play, this will likely be revealed with time. Meanwhile, Small Things Like These marks the reunion of Cillian Murphy and Tim Mielants, who previously worked together on Peaky Blinders.
Small Things Like These is based on the Booker Prize-nominated book by Claire Keegan. The film premiered at the Berlinale to resounding reviews. Set in 1980s Ireland, it stars Murphy as Bill, a coal delivery driver who is soft-spoken and a devoted father. One day, Bill uncovers disturbing activities happening at the local convent, led by Sister Mary, played by Emily Watson. The film explores dark themes as Bill is made to confront his internal trauma. Watson won Berlinale’s Silver Bear for her performance.
Talking about finding a distribution home at Lionsgate Play, Cillian Murphy said, “Especially since Small Things Like These marks the first project from Big Things Films, I’m particularly pleased Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions will bring it to audiences in Ireland, the U.S., and the U.K. Making the film was a labor of love; I can’t wait to talk about it. We are enormously grateful to Artists Equity for their unwavering support throughout this process. From the moment we shared the script, they have been there for us, and we are immensely grateful for their philosophy and partnership.”
