Circus is a film that Roopesh Shetty had worked on well before he went into the Bigg Boss Kannada house for the first season of the OTT edition. He spent 42 days there, emerged winner and headed right back in for the 100-day TV season, which he won as well. As the Bigg Boss Kannada Season 9 winner, Roopesh remained busy for a while with mandatory media interactions and programmes, after which he was held up with a Kannada movie release and IPL Kannada commentary. It is only in the last month or so that he’s been able to breathe easy and focus on the release of his next directorial, the Tulu film Circus.
Roopesh had announced that the film’s global release would be on June 23, but with only a day to go, bookings have not opened in Bengaluru and most other parts of the state. With Roopesh running helter-skelter promoting the film at college fests and other events, a source close to the team tells us that on June 23, Circus will release only in the coastal Tulu-speaking belt of Karnataka, namely Mangaluru, Surathkal, Padubidri, Udupi, Manipal, Karkala, Moodabidri, Belthangadi, Puttur, Sullia, Kundapura, Koppa, Mulleria and Kasaragod. “Roopesh will want to do a few promotional rounds in Bengaluru, which he has not been able to do now, so the rest of Karnataka release may only be after a week or two. Roopesh’s focus right now is on promoting the film in the Tulu belt, where bringing people back to theatres remains an issue. During his Bigg Boss stint, Roopesh had repeatedly said that his focus will be on working towards the upliftment of Tulu films,” says the source.
Circus, which also stars Rachana Rai, Aravind Bolar, Yash Shetty and Naveen D Padil, among others, is about Rahul (Roopesh), a young educated man, who wants to set up his own business but is unable to mortgage a family property and raise funds for the same.
