Never have I ever (Netflix)

Created by The Office and the Mindy Project star Mindy Kaling, Never Have I Ever is a coming-of-age comedy about an Indian-American teen Devi Vishwakumar, played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. The story is loosely based on Kaling’s own childhood growing up in America and it navigates through the various complexities of high-school whilst also challenging several pre-established stereotypes surrounding Asians living in the US.

Ms. Marvel (Disney+ Hotstar)

Marvel Studios and their willingness to push the boundaries of the stories they want to tell in Phase 4 was evident with Ms Marvel, even though parent company Disney have been criticized in the past for their repetitive content. However with Ms Marvel, the studio has created a unique blend of coming-of-age comedy and a superhero origin story.

Reservation Dogs (Disney+ Hotstar)

The surprise hit TV series of 2021 is Reservation Dogs. The story follows the lives of four Native American teenagers and their adventures and misadventures growing up in the reservation in Oklahoma. The series won several awards and was praised for its authentic representation of Native Americans.

Sex Education (Netflix)

The award winning British-comedy series, Sex Education, has become a cult classic comedy series in recent years. Set in the fictional school of Moordale Secondary School, the plot revolves around Otis, a high-school student who starts his own unauthorised sex therapy sessions for students in need. He teams with his best friends Eric and rebellious Maeve in order to succeed in his endeavors.

Heartstopper (Netflix)

One of the highest rated shows on this list is the 2022 British TV show, Heartstopper. This path breaking series was praised for its nuanced approach to developing well-written LGBT characters and storylines. The story mainly follows the life of a young boy named Charlie Spring who falls in love with a classmate. The series is based on the graphic novel by Alice Oseman.

The End of the F***ing World (Netflix)

Yet another British TV show makes this list and it is the black-comedy series The End of the F***ing World. The series follows a psychotic boy named James who intends to start killing humans after becoming bored of killing animals. However, he forms an unlikely relationship with his intended victim, a rebellious girl named Alyssa who has her own inner demons to deal with.
