In the midst of chaos and tragedy, the film follows Cardinal Lawrence as he assumes the role of pope after the sudden passing of a revered figure. Lawrence becomes entangled in a complex web of deceit, conspiracy, and secrets as the most influential members of the Catholic Church convene in the Vatican. As the cardinals grapple with their own aspirations and the precarious legacy of the church, the Vatican is transformed into a pressure cooker. The suspense builds as Lawrence delves deeper into enigmatic mysteries that could rock the Catholic Church to its core.

All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger assures viewers that Conclave will be an intense and thought-provoking experience. Robert Harris wrote both the novel and the screenplay, with Peter Straughan serving as a co-writer.

Conclave garnering critical praise and recognition

After making its world premiere at the illustrious 51st Telluride Film Festival, the film has since garnered extensive praise for its outstanding acting and compelling story. The American Film Institute ranked Conclave among the best films of 2024 after the film had a successful festival run and went on to a worldwide theatrical run. Multiple accolades, including a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination, attest to the film's critical success and cement its position as one of the year's most notable cinematic achievements.

Critics have praised Conclave for more than only its powerful story and outstanding acting; they also praised the film's painstaking attention to detail in depicting the Vatican as a literal and symbolic seat of authority. The film deftly depicts the perennial tensions inside the Catholic Church, such as secrecy and openness, as well as tradition and progress.
