Sanya Malhotra has been confirmed to be a part of the Hindi remake of the hit Malayalam film, The Great Indian Kitchen. The actor took to her social media pages and made the announcement. The Hindi remake rights have been bagged by Harman Baweja and the film will be directed by Arati Kadav.
Speaking about the same, a source had earlier told Pinkvilla that multiple producers competed for the remake rights to The Great Indian Kitchen, and Harman and Vicky were awarded the rights after a fierce battle. The duo was adamant about having a credible cast for the project, and after several rounds of conversations, they met with Sanya Malhotra.
The source also told the entertainment portal that the conversations are nearing completion, and everything should be written up in a week. With a start-to-finish timeframe, the filmmakers hope to get the film on the ground by May.
For the uninitiated, The Great Indian Kitchen is about a newlywed woman who tries to be the subservient wife that her husband and family expect of her. The film gained widespread critical praise, winning the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film, the Jeo Baby Award for Best Screenplay, and the Tony Babu Award for Best Sound Designer.
Nimisha Sajayan and Suraj Venjaramoodu played the lead roles in the film and were appreciated for their performances. The male lead of The Great Indian Kitchen is yet to be announced.
On January 15, 2021, the film was released directly on Neestream, a Malayalam OTT service. Because of various sequences relating to the Sabarimala lady admission controversy, several big OTT platforms, including Amazon Prime, GudSho OTT, and Netflix, as well as television networks, rejected the film. However, three months after its premiere on Neestream, Amazon Prime Video acquired the film's rights.
