Coolie movie box office collection day 5: Rajinikanth-Lokesh Kanagaraj film fails Monday test with huge drop

The Rajinikanth-Lokesh Kanagaraj film Coolie, which is currently running in theatres, has become the top grosser of Tamil cinema this year so far. The star-studded, pan-Indian film which had most expectations riding on the film, had brought much disappointment among fans. But has the film passed the Monday test at the box office? Let's know.

Coolie released in theatres on August 14, and had capitalised the Independence Day long weekend. Even as the film released alongside Hindi film War 2, Coolie did a strong business for a few days before falling into a slump. As per Sacnilk report, Coolie's box office for the first five days stands at Rs 206.65 crore in India. The film has been seeing a constant dip in the earnings. The first Monday (August 18) saw a meagre of Rs 12.15 crore earning across languages, as opposed to Sunday's Rs 35 crore earnings. However, one should also note that Coolie is certified A, which means only those above 18 years are allowed to watch the film.

Despite the best of names involved in the project, Coolie had opened to major disappointment to fans, who did not like the film's writing and Lokesh's screenplay. Ever since its release, Coolie has become the primary fodder for meme creation, which cites the story's loopholes and shortcomings, on social media.

Coolie’s post-theatrical streaming rights are with Prime Video. The streaming platform will announce the release date later in September. Featuring Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Upendra, Kaali Venkat, Kanna Ravi, Aamir Khan, Rachitha Ram and others, the action thriller is not part of LCU. Coolie comes at the time when Rajinikanth is celebrating 50 years in the industry as an actor.
