Coolie, the Tamil film which carried much anticipations and expectations from director Lokesh Kanagaraj, to be the Tamil cinema’s answer to 1000-crore record, became a colossal disappointment for fans. The Rajinikanth-starrer, which released in theatres earlier in August, is now streaming on Prime Video after completing its theatrical run. Coolie finishes off its score at Rs 515 crore, crossing only halfway of Tamil cinema’s dream.

When the collaboration between Lokesh Kanagaraj and Rajinikanth was announced, it was expected that the film will break all the records. Later, the makers of Coolie announced its star-studded ensemble, and the expectations only increased among fans and other stakeholders that Coolie will reach the 1000 crore mark, which Tamil cinema has only been dreaming about so far.

But August 14 saw the end of the dream, given Coolie ended up as a disappointment. The film, even as it featured stalwarts like Nagarjuna, Upendra, Aamir Khan and others, ended up becoming a dissatisfying watch. With the film certified A, it posed even more of a hindrance. As of now, Coolie ends its theatrical run by closing at RS 515 crore worldwide, which is the halfway mark for the illustrious record. Nevertheless, Coolie still remains to be the highest-grossing Tamil film so far in 2025.

Coolie is an action thriller film which is not under LCU. It revolves around a mansion owner named Deva who gets to know of his friend’s death and begins to probe into the actual reason behind it. In the process, he comes across a dangerous crime syndicate run by Simon.

Coolie also features Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Kanna Ravi, Rachitha Ram and others. The film has music by Anirudh Ravichander. The film is available for streaming on Prime Video in several languages.
