Netflix’s live action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop is the latest to join the long list of shows that have been cancelled by the streaming giant after one season. The 10 episode show premiered on Netflix on November 19.
Cowboy Bebop tells the story of three bounty hunters named Spike Spiegel, Jet Black and Faye Valentine, who spend their days roaming the galaxy in search of criminals in this spaceship, the titular Bebop. The series stars John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, Elena Satine, and Alex Hassell. It was developed by André Nemec.
The series is a live action adaptation of the popular Japanese anime of the same name, which premiered in 1998. An animated movie based on the series was also released in 2001.
Other live action adaptations of popular anime that did not go down well with viewers include the films Dragon Ball Evolution (2009) and Netflix’s Death Note (2017).
The original anime received critical acclaim and a huge fan following across the globe. The live action adaptation, however, failed to make the kind of impact its predecessor had. The series garnered mixed to negative reviews from both audiences and critics alike.

Netflix generally takes cancellation decisions based on comparisons between viewership and the costs involved in developing the series, writes The Hollywood Reporter. Although Cowboy Bebop did fairly well in its opening weekend, subsequent weeks saw its viewership go down.
