The psychological thriller Cuttputlli, headlined by Akshay Kumar and Rakul Preet, will be directly released on Disney+Hotstar, on September 2. The makers announced the news on Twitter, via an audio teaser.
With screenplay and dialogues by Aseem Arrora, this one is directed by Ranjit M Tewari of Bell Bottom-fame. In Cuttputlli, a cop sets out to solve a case involving mysterious murders all over the city. And, no prizes for guessing who plays the cop.
Bankrolled by Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani and Deepshikha Deshmukh, under Pooja Entertainment, Cuttputlli is lensed by the award-winning cinematographer, Rajeev Ravi of Moothon-fame.
On the work front, Akshay Kumar was seen last in Aanand L Rai’s family drama Raksha Bandhan, which received mixed reviews at the box office. The film follows Raju (Akshay), a shop owner, who is struggling to get his four younger sisters married. Further, the actor will be seen in the Hindi remake of Soorarai Potru, besides Ram Setu, OMG 2, Gorkha and Selfie.
Cuttputlli is Akshay Kumar’s second release on the OTT platform, following Laxmii, (the Tamil remake of Raghava Lawrence's Kanchana) also premiers on Disney+Hotstar.
Cuttputlli is a remake of the 2018 Tamil psychological thriller Raatsasan, which featured Vishnu Vishal and Amala Paul in the lead. It was directed by Ramkumar of Mundasupatti-fame, who spent close to two years writing the screenplay for Raatchasan, adapting the real-life incidents, into a story, set in Chennai.
Aside from a few logical loopholes, the Vishnu Vishal-starrer primarily works because the audience buys into the several coincidences, although everything mysteriously seems to have a connection with the protagonist. But, a gripping last forty minutes, involving an intense cat-and-mouse game, is worth watching.
Raatchasan's script piqued Vishnu's interest. "I quite liked Ramkumar's attention to detail in portraying the psycho's point of view. The best part is that there isn't much violence or gore. It had a message for young girls to be aware of what's going on around them and remain cautious,” the actor had stated, in a press meet.
