Daaku Maharaaj on OTT: Here's how much the digital rights of the Balakrishna starrer were sold for

Daaku Maharaaj is all set to stream on Netflix from February 21, 2025. The Balakrishna film ended as an above-average grosser at the box office, landing in the safe zone with all the profits involved. The action drama was initially supposed to be released on Netflix on February 9, 2025, but that did not happen. We have all the details for you.

Daaku Maharaaj to stream on Netflix

Sithara Entertainments, headed by Naga Vamsi, has a close relationship with Netflix, as most of his production ventures have (or will) stream on the platform in the days to come. Therefore, there were agreements made regarding the OTT deal and its release date. 

However, following the film's release, Netflix reassessed the deal based on the response and offered a price to the makers, which did not sit well with them. This is why the OTT release was postponed from February 9, 2025.

Daaku Maharaaj OTT deal update

Now that the deal is finalized, we have learned that the OTT rights for Daaku Maharaaj were sold for only Rs 19 crore, which is considered a compromise. As a result, the satellite rights were also affected and were sold for just Rs 5 crore. Recently, streaming giants have been hesitant to offer large sums for digital rights.

This trend happens for a reason: streaming platforms like Netflix assess the reach and global reception of a film before committing to a deal. That’s why Pan-India films often receive much higher offers from producers. Since Balakrishna's films aren't as popular on a Pan-India scale, the amount offered for Daaku Maharaaj was lower.

In the future, only big films with a wide reach are likely to receive large offers, and this has become a significant issue for makers who are banking heavily on OTT rights. OTT viewership has also declined in the past year, which has put platforms on the back foot in terms of shelling out big sums for digital rights. Unfortunately, Daaku Maharaaj is one of the films to suffer in this category. It will now be available for streaming on Netflix starting February 21, 2025.
