It’s been four months since director Shashank Soghal’s debut directorial Daredevil Musthafa was removed from its streaming partner, Amazon Prime Video , but as of today, April 19, it is back. Daredevil Musthafa had been picked up by the platform under a hybrid deal for a period of 6 months only, which ran out on December 15, 2023. It was the second Kannada film that Daali Dhananjaya’s home banner had presented in theatres and helped secure OTT deals. The first was Orchestra, Mysuru! which also had only 6 months on the platform and is yet to find another home or renew its deal with Prime Video.

Daredevil Musthafa is the latest Kannada film that’s been able to renew its contract with the streamer. Weeks ago it was Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side B that went missing from the platform, which prompted rumours that actor-producer Rakshit Shetty was looking at striking a deal with Zee Network, considering that it held the satellite rights. But then Prime Video and Rakshit came to an understanding yet again, which made sense given that Side A is also on the streamer.

While Daredevil Musthafa. has had a good run on OTT, today’s other presentations on Prime Video include For Regn (included with Prime) and Yuva (rental only). Daredevil Musthafa is based on a short story by noted litterateur Poornachandra Tejasvi.

The story is set in the fictional small town of Abachuru, where the local PU college gets a new student – its first Muslim enrolment – Jamal Abdul Musthafa Hussain. A predominantly Hindu town, Abachuru is famed for the conflict between them and the Muslim community, specifically during the Ganesha Chaturthi celebrations. Musthafa’s admission, obviously, does not go well with a section of students.

Daredevil Musthafa released in theatres weeks after The Kerala Story came out and struggled with the show/screen count, but got a lot of positive feedback. Shashank has been vocal about how helpful Dhananjaya was in throwing the might of his banner behind the film.
