Just before Durga Puja, four Bengali films were released together on October 19. Prosenjit Chatterjee, Anirban Bhattacharya, Jisshu U Sengupta and Jaya Ahsan-starrer Srijit Mukherji’s Dawshom Awbotaar, Dev-starrer Arun Roy’s Bagha Jatin, Abir Chatterjee-Mimi Chakraborty’s Rakta Beej and Koel Mallick-starrer Arindam Sil’s Jongole Mitin Mashi. All four films saw good box office collections during Puja. Their run continued till the wave of Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 came to the box office on Kali Puja. This is the time when the Bengali films took the backseat. How did the Bengali films do business in the meantime?
Srijit Mukherji's Dawshom Awbotaar topped the list, crossing Rs 6 cr in its third week. This film's budget was less than Dev' Bagha Jatin or Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy’s Raktabeej. According to Tolly Bangla, the film's budget was Rs 3 cr. Thus, the ticket sale was double the budget.
On the other hand, Dev had said that Bagha Jatin’s budget was Rs 5 cr. According to TollyBangla Box-Office, the gross collection was Rs 5.5 cr (this data is not collected from the producers). The producer will make a profit by selling the digital, music, and satellite rights. But the box office disappointed Dev in a way.
Raktabeej, starring Abir and Mimi, was the dark horse in this Puja. It started slow but right now it is ahead of the other films in terms of the number of shows. Currently, the film has eleven shows in greater Kolkata while the other films have half of that number. The film, with a budget of Rs 4 cr, has a gross collection of Rs 5 cr.
Arindam Sil's Jongole Mitin Masi trails far behind. With a budget of Rs 2.5 cr, the film made around Rs 3 cr by selling the satellite rights.
