Birds of Prey fans, especially the ones Black Canary won over with her charisma and hypersonic screams, are in for some exciting news. According to reports in Cinelinx, a spin-off movie focusing on Black Canary is in the early stages of development at HBO Max with Jurnee Smollet-Bell reprising her role as the popular DC superhero. American screenwriter and filmmaker Misha Green will pen the story for the upcoming project.

Jurnee Smollet-Bell seemed to confirm the thrilling news on her Twitter handle, re-tweeting a Collider report of the news with a caption which shows like fans, the actress too can barely contain her excitement at the news. “Guess the canary is out of the cage!” she begins, followed by her signaling her elation at getting to partner up with Mish Green yet again for the project. The upcoming spin-off will mark the actress’ second collaboration with the scriptwriter, after the horror drama series Lovecraft Country. The duo had earlier indicated their interest in further exploring Black Canary’s story while doing press for the series.

Black Canary had made her live-action film debut in the DCEU Birds of Prey, which focused on the story of Harley Quinn after her break up with the Joker. Jurnee Smollet-Bell had emulated the character, a singer who joined Quinn’s adventures and in the process came to fully embrace her superpowers, the most prominent of them being her powerful hypersonic screams.

HBO Max and DC are keeping busy this year with two other superhero projects confirmed to be in development. The first one, Batgirl, will see Leslie Grace as the caped crusader. In addition to it, Blue Beetle, which will feature DC’s first venture with a Latin character in the lead, is also said to be in the works.

Sue Kroll, who had bankrolled Birds of Prey, is all set to produce the upcoming film as well under her banner Kroll & Co. Entertainment.
