The buzz around R-rated movies in the West has reached its peak, thanks to the brilliance of certain films that have redefined what that rating means. At the top of the list was Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. However, Deadpool & Wolverine, which released on July 26, 2024, was always expected to be tough competition for the DC Elseworlds movie due to its scale, anticipation, concept, and star-studded cast. Everything aligned to make it a blockbuster hit. But who could have predicted that the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer would dethrone Joker and become the highest-grossing R-rated movie at the global box office in just 23 days? Yes, you read that right—Deadpool & Wolverine has made history, and we are witnesses to it.
The story of the Clown Prince of Crime from Gotham, one of Batman's most pivotal enemies, was DC Elseworlds’ biggest bet—and it succeeded. Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, not only smashed box office records but also earned Phoenix an Oscar for Best Actor. Globally, the movie grossed $1.079 billion, establishing itself as the highest-grossing R-rated movie in cinema history since 2019. But now, Deadpool & Wolverine has crossed the billion-dollar mark and surpassed the DC Elseworlds movie, taking its position at the top and pushing Joker down to second place. Read on to learn more about this milestone.
According to the latest numbers, Deadpool & Wolverine has become a historic movie, one that has resurrected the Marvel Cinematic Universe and delivered a box office bonanza after a long time. The Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer has earned a total of $1.086 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever in cinema history.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, shared a note yesterday celebrating the movie's success. It read, “Thanks for making Marvel Studios’ first R-rated movie the biggest of all time. It’s fantastic to see that audiences are loving this movie as much as we all loved making it. All those conversations were worth it!”
However, Deadpool & Wolverine should be aware that its position is still at risk because October marks the release of Joker 2, also known as Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. As a direct sequel to Joker, it has the potential to earn even more than the first installment. While Joker held the top position for half a decade, Deadpool & Wolverine could face stiff competition in a few months. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
