Deepika Padukone sees her appointment to the Cannes jury as a logical evolution in her career, but she was surprised to be asked. The actor told Variety that the festival administration appeared to be so certain of their decision. And it makes her pause and consider whether she has given herself enough credit.
Padukone feels that's fine, because she doesn't want to feel like she has accomplished something monumental. The actor feels she must be doing something right if she has landed here today without even recognising it. As a result, she doesn't want to dwell too much on what brought her here. What the actor wants to do now is continue on that path, which means remaining honest throughout the process, so that when situations like this arise, they will.
Padukone arrives at Cannes at a time when India is the market's guest of honour, and incentives have been announced for foreign films filming in India.
The actor says that, as a country, they have always been friendly, inviting, and welcoming. And Padukone feels like this just makes things so much easier, adding that it means more jobs for Indian film professionals and more opportunities to show off India to the rest of the globe.
The Chhapaak actor believes they are delivering the same thing as they are travelling to foreign areas for tax breaks and the convenience of manoeuvring, and she thinks it's fantastic.
The actor, who co-stars with Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham in Siddharth Anand's Pathaan, is currently working on Nag Ashwin's Project K. Next up is with Amitabh Bachchan in the Indian remake of The Intern, which she is also producing through her KA Productions in collaboration with Warner Bros. and Sunir Kheterpal for Athena.
Meanwhile, Padukone and her husband, Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, will make Cannes a regular mid-year vacation destination. The actor's jury service gives them future access to the jury box.
She explained that they were just going to be here for two weeks. Watch movies, go in and exit quietly. They will be like candy store kids.
