Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc had a special surprise in store. It was in the form of Sakonji Urokodaki, who is a retired Water Hashira. Episode 4 of Demon Slayer season 4 saw him come back, just as all the Hashiras train to beat Muzan Kibusuji. Interestingly, Urokodaki is someone who has trained Tanjiro Kamado as well as the present Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka. The trio is connected by something, which is a cruel destiny for them.
Sakonji Urokodaki has trained both Tanjiro Kamado and present Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka, along with the past potential Water Hashira, Sabito. We all already know how Sabito has affected Tomioka and how Tanjiro helped both of Urokodaki’s students find peace. Thus, it was no surprise that Urokodaki agreed to come take care of Muzan’s most wanted target, half-demon Nezuko Kamado. Apart from all of these co-incidences, every Water Hashira in Demon Slayer’s timeline is connected by one tragedy – of their family member passing on, often while trying to protect them.
Tomioka’s story was explored in the third episode itself. His elder sister Tsutako was engaged and about to be married. It was just one night before her wedding when a demon attacked the siblings. Tsutako protected Giyu and sacrificed herself so that her younger brother survives and if possible, thrives. To honour her memory, Giyu started wearing a dark red robe.
Years later, he became a Demon Slayer trainee, which is where he met Sabito. All of us already know the tragic end that awaits, and how Giyu once again found someone to save him and get killed by a demon in the process.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba commenced with Tanjiro’s story. His whole family – mother, brothers, sisters – were slaughtered by a demon. At that time, Tanjiro was out in the woods to provide for the family. By the time he reached home, they all passed on, except for Nezuko. She was still breathing but it was not normal. Hearing her shallow but loud breaths, Tanjiro decided to take her to a doctor. Co-incidentally, that is where he met Giyu, who deciphered that Nezuko is now a demon. He wanted to kill her but on Tanjiro’s plea, Giyu let her survive. It is interesting to note how far the duo have come, and how their master Urokodaki gets to witness it all in action, right in front of him.
