The story is based on the 2003 Antwerp diamond heist and follows a sheriff from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department as he pursues a wanted criminal across Europe in search of a possible accomplice to a heist. The film was released in theatres in the US by Lionsgate on January 10, 2025. It made $57 million globally despite critical acclaim.

Crime thriller plot overview

In Europe, Big Nick has resumed his pursuit of Donnie, who is mired in the criminal underworld of the Panther Mafia and diamond thieves. As they devise a daring scheme to steal diamonds from the world's largest exchange, the pursuit intensifies and the game of deceit, power, and survival becomes increasingly dangerous. In this nail-biting crime thriller, the underworld is at its most vicious and the police are closing in. Who will be the last to take a stand?

Butler said in January 2025, "I will not wait anymore," confirming production on a third film and partially accepting responsibility for the seven-year hiatus. The studio had received a pitch for a potential third feature, according to Gudegast, and the success of the second installment was dependent on it.

Future sequels and global settings

Gudegast announced plans for at least two more sequels later that month, and he also said that the script for the third installment was finished. The story would revolve around actual heists that occurred in various parts of the world; the third film would take place in Africa, the subsequent films in Brazil, and the final chapter in Southeast Asia.

The studio has planned to begin filming the third installment before 2026. In the same month, Lionsgate formally approved production on the third film. Not only will Gerard Butler be back as producer and performer, but O'Shea Jackson, Jr. is reportedly in talks to join him. The film is a collaboration between Tucker Tooley Entertainment, G-BASE Productions, Lionsgate Films, and Christian Gudegast, who will also serve as the film's director.
