Indrajith Sukumaran’s latest investigative thriller Dheeram had the odds stacked against it the minute it was decided to release it in theatres along with superstar Mammootty’s Kalamkaval. The Jithin Suresh directorial had limited screens and early in the day, there was news of show cancellations, what with Kalamkaval the clear favourite at the box office. However, as the day progressed, reports about the film began to trickle in on social media, so much so that #IndrajithSukumaran was trending on X at one point.
However, upon closer inspection, the language and content of several of the posts that had popped up read eerily similar, with only the slightest variations in all of them. “Gripping thriller with good emotions and twists”, “Indrajith Sukumaran delivers powerful performance”, “Explosive BGM”, were some of the common factors in most of the comments one found labelled #Dheeram. If one were to hazard a guess, a majority of these seem like deliberate plants, especially given that in even the posts that seemed organic there was no hint of negativity towards the film.
The gist of these reviews is that Dheeram is a solid family watch that is emotional and gripping, with good performances, background score and visuals. Indrajith plays an encounter specialist, ACP Stalin Joseph in the film, who is entrusted with the investigation of a series of mysterious murders, which hint at it being the handiwork of a serial killer. Can Stalin get to the bottom of it and deliver justice to a grieving parent? That is the official synopsis of Dheeram.
The film has Indrajith back as a cop in a thriller, a genre and role, he’d been trying to avoid, because he saw merit in Jithin’s story and narrative pattern. There was a novelty factor to the process in the investigation, he felt, and that drew him to the film, which also stars Nishanth Sagar, Aju Varghese, Renji Paniker, Divya Pillai, among others.
