Director Mari Selvaraj is riding high on the success of his recent film Maamannan , which has earned widespread critical acclaim for shedding light on a pressing political issue in the country. While the movie continues to capture attention following its recent digital release on Netflix, Mari Selvaraj is wasting no time and has already set his sights on his next project.

Recently surfaced images online showcase Mari Selvaraj collaborating with Dhruv Vikram, who is deeply immersed in kabaddi training. Dhruv appears to be rigorously preparing himself to embody the role of a young kabaddi player. Mari was initially slated to direct a sports drama centred around kabaddi under the production banner of director Pa Ranjith. However, the project faced delays due to Mari's involvement in Maamannan.

Given Mari Selvaraj's consistent track record of thought-provoking narratives, his upcoming movie with Dhruv is also expected to offer a commentary on contemporary social and political issues. The buzz is that the movie is a period drama set in the 1990s against the backdrop Thoothukudi. And it's said to be inspired by real events happened in the life of a kabaddi player.

Maamannan, released in theaters last month amid much anticipation, garnered a range of reviews from critics. Despite this, the film made a significant impact at the box office, resonating strongly with audiences. It fearlessly delved into the prevalent casteist and prejudiced attitudes within political parties that claim to be proponents of social justice.

Central to Maamannan is the exploration of caste prejudice and its pervasive influence on society and politics. The film portrays the struggles faced by individuals from marginalized communities, exemplified through the character of Maamannan, who confronts discrimination and navigates a system deeply rooted in inequality. It highlights the arduous journey and compromises that individuals from marginalized backgrounds endure in their pursuit of even a fraction of power.

Since its release on Netflix , Maamannan has reportedly secured a spot among the top 10 choices of the global streaming audience.
