Filmmaker Venkat Prabhu has sparked controversy by sharing a critical take on recent trailers of Tamil cinema. Comedian-actor Karthik Kumar recently made a video criticizing the lack of originality in trailers, which offer the same experience and entertainment repeatedly.
Karthik posted his comments after the release of the teaser for Coolie, an upcoming Tamil film starring Superstar Rajinikanth. Many quickly concluded that Karthik was mocking Coolie. Karthik's video gained more traction when Venkat Prabhu shared it on his Instagram story.

Reacting to the controversy, Venkat clarified that it was not his intention. However, he noted that he agreed with Karthik's assessment of the Tamil film industry, where every movie seems to play it safe by exploring the same themes and narrative styles, typically revolving around hero worship.
"No, no, no!!! It’s about all of us who are doing commercial flicks!! And what he is saying is kinda true too!! If we try to offer something different from the regular commercial template!! Are the fans ready to accept?" Venkat reacted to the controversy on social media.

For the uninitiated, Karthik made a video questioning the sensibilities of the audience, who react with great enthusiasm to movies that look and sound the same.
"Controversial opinion maybe, but I think all these trailers dropping off these big commercial movies are all the same trailer! Every movie has the same trailer. The hero-centric, with some retro music and some punch dialogues from their own earlier movies. The only original thing about it is we get excited as if it's a new thing. Our reaction is the only original thing that comes from all these. Why are you all reacting differently to the same trailer? Crazy people," said Karthik.
The teaser for Coolie opens with Rajinikanth storming a safe house holding troves of ill-gotten wealth while reciting lines from one of his old movies, with a remixed song from another movie blazing in the backdrop.
Many have wondered whether Venkat Prabhu's upcoming movie, The Greatest of All Time, starring Thalapathy Vijay, will be different from regular commercial flicks in light of this controversy.
