Dies Irae is the latest Malayalam horror thriller film, which began streaming on JioHotstar via OTTplay Premium from December 5, 2025. Pranav Mohanlal headlines the Rahul Sadasival directorial as rich brat Rohan, who is spooked by paranormal activities after his ex-girlfriend Kani’s death. So was Rohan able to escape the wrath of Kani in the film? Let’s take a look at what happened in the climax of Dies Irae: The Day of Wrath (spoilers ahead)
What’s the plot of Dies Irae?
Dies Irae gets going as Rohan comes to know about the death of Kani, with whom he had a short fling which ended when he ghosted her. He is slightly disturbed by her demise and pays a visit to her mourning family, and randomly picks up a pink hairclip from Kani’s room. But when he returns home, he is disturbed by a supernatural presence and he is convinced it is Kani’s ghost. He reaches out to Madhusudanan Potti (Gibin Gopinath), Kani’s neighbour, for help.
What happens in the climax of Dies Irae?
But in the interval block scene, Rohan realises that it was a man’s spirit and not Kani that had been haunting him. He along with Madhu then sets out to find more about his man. Through Kani’s friend, they come to know that a man had been stalking her. Further enquiries led them to find that the man is named Philip, who has left to work in Saudi. At this point, Madhu informs Rohan that the son of Elsamma, Kani’s househelp, also works in Saudi and might have some contacts about the agents who sent people to the Gulf.
Rohan then heads out to Elsamma’s house to ask about her son Manu, while Madhu goes to meet a Christian priest to make enquiries about Philip.
But at Elsamma’s house, Rohan is shocked to learn that Philip is in fact her son, Manu. Parallely, it is also shown that Madhu too gets the same information from the priest. In a dramatic turn of events, Rohan discovers the decaying body of Philip/Manu in one room, revealing that he had died of cancer but the spirit continues to linger. Just then, Elsamma hits him and Rohan falls unconscious. We learn that Philip was obsessed with Kani, and because Rohan took her hairclip, he started troubling him as well.
Amid this, Madhu returns and tells Rohan that to free the spirit, they have to remove Kani’s anklet which is now tied to the corpse's leg. But Elsamma, who had been digging a grave, returns, and a fierce tussle ensues between her and Rohan, who finally knocks her out. Unable to remove the anklet from the body, Rohan chops off the leg and dumps the anklet in the fire. The spirit is freed but the fire engulfs the house. Both Madhu, Rohan escape the house along with Elsamma.
In the final moments it is seen that Rohan is packing his bags to join his family in the US. But he notices a movement on the bed, eerily similar to when Manu’s spirit was haunting him. He throws a bed sheet which reveals a supernatural identity seated on the bed.
With trembling hands, Rohan pulls back the bed sheet. Though we are never shown what is hiding beneath the sheet, Rohan says ‘What the Fuck!’, hinting that Kani’s spirit has probably returned to haunt him.
