The movie stars Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala in lead roles, while Preity Zinta makes her film debut in a supporting role.

Dil Se follows a non-linear narrative and is set in various settings, including Delhi, Ladakh, and Assam. The plot revolves around a radio broadcaster named Ajay and his chance encounter with a mysterious woman and he falls for her at first sight. However, a dark truth and the ulterior motives of the woman have the potential to shake Amar’s life. The movie showcases the journey of obsessive love and a secret mission witnessed through the eyes of the protagonists.
Dil Se ending - What happens
Dil Se is a layered story about love, sacrifice, obsession, terrorism, vengeance, and redemption. Set in different timelines, it switches between the past and present to trace a doomed love story between two unlikely lovers. When Amar gives up after being rejected multiple times by Meghna, he agrees to an arranged marriage with Preeti. However, his fate takes another twist when Meghna (later revealed as Moina) arrives at his house and asks for his help, seeking shelter and a job. Later, Amar gets suspicious about her identity, and she reveals her traumatic backstory—how she was raped and lost her loved ones due to the ruthless security forces and she wants to seek vengeance.
In a series of twists and turns, Amar becomes a prime suspect in the terrorist activities, and when he returns home splattered with blood, he finds that his mother is being interrogated by the CBI. Later, he intercepts Moina's location in Sunder Nagar and embarks on a risky mission to stop her from her deadly suicide mission.
However, his plans are thwarted when he is arrested again and fails to convince the officers of his innocence. Burning with the desire to thwart the attacks, Amar escapes from CBI custody and follows Moina. In the tragic ending, Amar expresses his undying love for Moina, but she doesn’t reply. His persistent confessions and true love force Moina to embrace his love, and the duo share an affectionate hug before getting killed as the bomb hidden under Moina’s dress explodes. The unconventional ending showcases how Amar saves multiple lives through his sacrifice and obsessive love, which even melts the heart of a terrorist.
Meanwhile, the mid-credit scene showcases that the terrorists were caught by the CBI.
How does Amar’s obsessive love overcome hate?
Mani Ratnam’s film Dil Se explores beautifully how hate and revenge are strong emotions but showcases that love still manages to empower them. In the movie, Amar’s obsession and selfless love finally melt Moina’s heart, and despite their forbidden love and twisted fates, they find redemption in the last scene as they embrace each other wholeheartedly. The bittersweet ending against the backdrop of social commentary and political conflicts highlights how love can heal even shattered hearts and tainted souls but eventually demands a sacrifice. Here, many were saved from the wrath of vengeance by Amar’s sacrifice.
