Dinesh Vijan on skipping theatrical release of Bhool Chuk Maaf: 'What matters more is standing together'

Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi's highly awaited comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf will not be making its theatrical debut. An unfortunate turn of events has led to the film's removal from theatres one day before its May 9 debut. On May 16, it will instead make its direct debut on Amazon Prime Video.

Security concerns prompt change in strategy

The decision is a response to the nationwide surge in security measures brought about by the escalating tensions between Pakistan and India. In light of the present political atmosphere, the producers—Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios—released a statement in which they explained their decision: "In light of recent events and the heightened security drills across the nation, we, at Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios, have decided to bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, directly to your homes on May 16 only on Prime Video, worldwide."

Producer Dinesh Vijan, who has supported films such as Stree, Badlapur, and the historical smash Chhaava this year, emphasised that the choice was not made carelessly but rather out of a sense of duty. In an interview with Mid Day, he said that they felt a heavy obligation to put the country's feelings first in light of what has happened recently. Right now, unity among the country is crucial, especially when the stakes are high. He acknowledged the last-minute alterations and expressed concern about their potential impact on the film.

Dinesh Vijan's confidence

Vijan was certain that the film would continue to be successful despite the last-minute shift in distribution tactics. He shared that a good story will always have an audience; that much is certain of them. They hope that Bhool Chuk Maaf brings comfort and joy at a time when they could use it the most.

Bhool Chuk Maaf is Karan Sharma's brainchild and follows a couple caught in a never-ending cycle of events. Prior to the announcement, advance bookings had already begun due to the high level of interest generated by its distinctive idea and ensemble cast.

Rao is known for his popular rom-coms such as Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana and Behen Hogi Teri.

Refund assurances

People in the know say pre-booked ticket holders shouldn't be concerned, as exhibitors will issue a refund in these instances. A trade source revealed to the tabloid that the situation means that the exhibitors will be returning all presale ticket purchases for Bhool Chuk Maaf.
