Aashiq Abu is definitely one of the most talented directors of the Malayalam film industry, who has a unique approach towards his works. Several ups and downs have been a part of his career and the most prominent one was the 2014 Mammootty starrer Gangster which tanked at the box office.
Even though the movie was inspired by the Hollywood classic The Godfather, it failed at the box office and couldn’t satisfy the audience. In a recent interview, the director opened up about the failure, and said the movie was much hyped. He said that people expected too much as Mammootty was in the titular role. The massive posters and magnificent trailers added more fuel to it, as quoted by the Times of India.
He also thinks that the movie lacked an engaging screenplay, though it had a top notch animation sequence in the opening, and fine cinematography. He also is proud of being part of such an unique experiment in Malayalam, such an animation sequence, which the industry hadn’t witnessed then.
Aashiq Abu has previously collaborated with Mammootty in the 2009 movie Daddy Cool, which was a hit among the audience. He said that the expectation level during the first film was low, which helped in the success of the movie unlike Gangster. Eventually with his path breaking movies like Salt N’ Pepper, 22 Female Kottayam, and Da Thadiya, people started anticipating more from him, and expecting something spectacular each time he is on board.
He also added that the ‘shoddy screenplay’ backfired at them, which led to the ‘boring’ reviews from the audiences.
The director has much expected movies like Naaradan and Neelavelicham in his kitty, while he is also producing the upcoming Kunchacko Boban starrer Bheemante Vazhi.
