Disney and Pixar have given animated film fans some incredible movies to watch over the years. The latest addition to this list is Luca - a coming-of-age story where the titular character's world is perfect till his secret is safe. The film will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar for Indian audiences on June 18.
Featuring the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Maya Rudolph, Jim Gaffigan and Emma Berman, Luca is the tale of the eponymous character and his best friend Alberto. They're sea monsters who can transform into humans on land. Luca's summer is filled with scooter rides, gelato and new friendships but will they successfully keep their secret from humans, who seem to hate sea monsters?
Set in the Italian Riviera, the filmmakers of Luca did their own bit of research before beginning to work on the film. Director Enrico Casarosa is a native Italian who led the rest of the team to the Italian coastline as part of two research trips. Here, the creators studied the colour of the ocean and the layout of the town square to accurately bring Italian history and Japanese artistry into the movie.
Luca will also be Pixar's only movie in over a year to premiere in theatres in the US. Only one theatre - the historic El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles - will be screening the movie. This decision was made after Pixar staffers expressed their disappointment at not being able to see their hard-work reflect on big screens in the country.
The soundtrack for Luca has been curated by the award winning composer Dan Romer and produced by Andrea Warren. Luca will be available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar from June 18.
