A still of Awat Ratanapintha from Doi Boy
Transitioning from his expertise in documentaries, Thai director Nontawat Numbenchapol delved into the realm of fiction with his debut feature film, Doi Boy, exploring familiar themes of border conflicts, ethnicity, prostitution, and human rights.
Doi Boy story
Set against the backdrop of Thailand's social fringes, the film, Doi Boy follows the interconnected lives of three young men as they navigate the complexities of their circumstances and their shared pursuit of justice. At the heart of the story is Sorn, an illegal immigrant from Myanmar who, despite his heterosexuality, finds himself working as a gay prostitute in Chiang Mai. His life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters a mysterious customer, who turns out to be a political activist on the run. As Sorn becomes entangled in the activist's plight, he finds himself questioning his own place in society and the sacrifices he is willing to make for a better future.
What is the situation of Thailand?
Thailand, the country, which was once perceived as paradise, has been struggling with social and political issues that have cast a shadow over its serene image. These challenges include the cases of undocumented workers, illegal immigrants escaping the turmoil of Myanmar's civil war, police brutality, and the hazard of traffic congestion.
Nontawat has pointed out all these issues in Doi Boy to bring the matter of Thailand in front of the whole world. The film has a theatrical release on October 7. The film made its World Premiere at 28th Busan International Film Festival, and surprisingly, the tickets were sold out within 10 minutes.
Doi Boy star-cast
Doi Boy stars Awat Ratanapintha as Sorn, Arak Amornsupasiri as Ji, Bhumibhat Thavornsiri as Wuth, Panisara Rikulsurakan as Bee, and Ornjira Lamwilai as Som.
Now Netflix has acquired the rights of Doi Boy, and the film will now make its OTT debut on November 24, 2023.
