Even today, Roopa Ganguly’s portrayal of Draupadi in BR Chopra’s iconic serial Mahabharata is etched into our minds. The character has become a cult classic with the fans. No later actresses who played the role could surpass Roopa Ganguly’s popularity. Now, Tollywood’s new Draupadi, Rukmini Maitra, wished to take a workshop from the veteran actress.

After Binodini Dasi in Binodini: Ekta Natir Upakhyan and Satyabati in Byomkesh O Durgo Rohoshyo, Rukmini will play Draupadi in Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s next. She has started the preparation. Previously, to play Binodini, she took dance training and did workshops with Sudipta Chakraborty.

Recently, in an interview with a news media, Rukmini said, “Roopa Ganguly is the Draupadi at the national level. I have seen her work. I wish to do a workshop by Roopa Madam. If she agrees to teach me, I will have nothing to ask for.” She also said that she did not have any talks with the veteran actress regarding Draupadi.

Needless to say, portraying the character on the big screen is challenging. Firstly, it is a period film. Secondly, the strong female character will portray shades of the then-patriarchal society. However, Dev is happy after seeing the research of director Ram Kamal Mukherjee. The magnum opus will be jointly produced by Dev Entertainment Ventures and Pramod Films. The film is based on the popular writer Prativa Ray's Odia novel Yajnaseni. Ram Kamal will capture Mahabharat from Draupadi’s viewpoint. Now, the fans are waiting to see Rukmini in the new avatar.

The first look of Draupadi was released, and the poster showed a royal throne with a lion and a bow and arrow on it. The Yajna fire is burning in front of it. Ram Kamal is working on the script besides handling the post-production of Binodini.
